Frequently Asked Questions Canoe in lake

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of kayak is best for beginners?

For beginners, we recommend stable, user-friendly kayaks such as sit-on-top or sit-in recreational kayaks. These kayaks offer greater stability and are easier to get in and out of, making them perfect for those new to the sport. Our beginner-friendly models come in various sizes and styles to suit different water conditions and user preferences.

How do I determine the right kayak size for me?

The right kayak size depends on a few factors, including your height, weight, and the type of kayaking you plan to do. Generally, longer kayaks offer better speed and tracking, while shorter kayaks are more maneuverable. Our expert staff can guide you and is always available to help you choose the perfect fit.

Do you offer SUP lessons or paddleboarding tours?

Yes, we offer paddleboarding lessons for all levels, from beginners to advanced paddlers. Our certified instructors provide expert guidance tailored to your skill level, ensuring a safe and enjoyable learning experience. We also organize guided paddleboarding tours that explore beautiful local waterways. Check our ‘Experiences’ section for more details and to book your next paddleboarding adventure.

Do you offer kayaking lessons or guided tours

Yes, we proudly offer kayaking lessons for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced enthusiasts. Our experienced instructors provide personalized training, ensuring you learn at a pace that's comfortable for you. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine advanced techniques, our lessons are tailored to meet your needs. Additionally, we organize guided tours that allow you to explore scenic routes and enjoy unique kayaking experiences. Check our ‘Experiences’ section for more details and to book your next kayaking adventure.

What safety equipment do I need when kayaking?

Safety is paramount in kayaking. Essential safety equipment includes a personal flotation device (PFD), a whistle or signaling device, and a bilge pump or sponge. A helmet if you are on the river. It's also wise to have a first-aid kit, and to dress for the water temperature, not just the air temperature. We offer a range of safety gear tailored to your type of kayaking adventures.

Can I use the same kayak for both fishing and recreation?

Absolutely! Many of our kayaks are versatile and can be used for both fishing and recreational purposes. Look for kayaks with ample storage, rod holders, and comfortable seating. These features make them suitable for a relaxing day on the water or an active fishing trip. Check out our multi-purpose kayak range for options that blend the best of both worlds.

What's the difference between an inflatable and a hard paddleboard?

Inflatable paddleboards (iSUPs) offer convenience and portability, as they can be deflated for easy transportation and storage. They are great for beginners due to their stability and durability. Hard paddleboards, on the other hand, offer better performance and speed, making them an alternative choice for more experienced paddlers and those engaging in activities like racing or surfing.

How do I choose the right size paddleboard?

The right size depends on your weight and paddling style. Generally, larger, thicker, wider boards offer more stability and are great for beginners, while smaller, narrower boards are designed for speed and maneuverability. Our customer service team is always ready to help you find the perfect board for your needs.

Is paddleboarding suitable for children?

Yes, paddleboarding is a family-friendly activity. We offer a range of paddleboards suitable for children, which are shorter and lighter, making them easier to maneuver. Safety is crucial, so ensure children wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) and are always supervised by an adult.

How do I select the right length for my kayak paddle?

The ideal kayak paddle length depends on your height and the width of your kayak. As a general guideline, taller individuals or those with wider kayaks should opt for longer paddles. But it also depends on they style of kayaking you are embarking on. Paddles typically range from 191 cm to 280 cm. The shorter lengths are usually for use with whitewater kayaks, and longest for fishing kayaks, with recreational kayak paddles falling somewhere in middle. We offer a size chart to help you find the perfect fit based on your kayak's dimensions and your height. Or stop by the shop and let our expert staff fit the correct paddle for you for the type of kayak you use.

What should I consider when choosing the blade shape for my kayak paddle?

Blade shape affects your paddling efficiency and style. Wider blades deliver more power and are suited for quick, strong strokes, ideal for whitewater kayaking or touring in dynamic environments. Narrower blades are easier on the arms and better for long-distance paddling or calm water exploration. Consider your kayaking environment and physical strength when choosing a blade shape.

What are the differences between paddle materials, and which should I choose?

Paddles come in various materials like aluminum, fiberglass, and carbon fiber or some combination there of. Aluminum paddles are durable and budget-friendly, making them great for beginners, but tend to be heavy and lacking performance. Fiberglass paddles offer a balance between performance and weight, suitable for novice to intermediate paddlers. Carbon fiber paddles are the lightest and stiffest, providing high performance for the serious enthusiasts, or racers.

How do I choose the correct length for my SUP paddle?

For SUP paddles, a good rule of thumb is to choose a paddle that is about 8 to 10 inches taller than you are. However, the ideal length can also depend on your paddling style and the type of water you'll be in. Adjustable paddles are a versatile option, allowing you to experiment with different lengths.

Went to all the bike shops in the city, went with Get Outdoors. What a great decision! The first time I went in Stamps(bike tech) took a great deal of time talking to me and going all the options available. Even took the time to digitally size me to ensure I go with the correct size bike. There was no pressure or high pitch sales, told him I’d be back. Returned the next day just before closing and was greeted by Chis who also took a considerable amount of time with me, even set up a bike for me to take for a test ride. I brought the bike :)! Looking for a good bike shop? Go see these guys!

Best bike shop ever, their customer service is outstanding and that means everything to me…, I bought my bike from here and live in Fayetteville, NC and travel to have anything that it needs, the folks are down to earth and welcoming and if they don’t have what you need they have no trouble getting it for you!! Love this store and the people!

If there's anything they live and breathe more than bikes and kayaks, it's customer service! Will got me hooked up with a Trek bike that was 20% less than anywhere else I had seen it. They were 100% more knowledgeable and helpful as well.
